France redeploys an Atlantic 2 maritime patrol aircraft to Romania. Anti-submarine and mine detection missions in the Black Sea
From 1 April to 21 April 2024 a French maritime patrol aircraft type Atlantic 2 (Atlantique 2) is deployed at Mihail Kogălniceanu 57 Air Base, in Romania.
The French AIGLE mission in Romania confirms that the aircraft is deployed at Kogălniceanu and will carry out anti-submarine and mine detection missions in the Black Sea.
The Mission Aigle is a French-led military mission deployed to Romania following the activation of the Graduated Response Plans by the Supreme Allied Commander Europe as a response to the Russian Invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
After the unprovoked and illegal invasion of Ukraine by Russia on 24 February 2022 the danger of mines in the Black Sea has become increasingly acute as military operations progressed between the warring parties. The Romanian Navy destroyed several mines.
The French Atlantic 2 aircraft that will carry out missions in the Black Sea belongs to the French Navy. The Atlantic 2 aircraft will take part in the NATO Sea Shield exercise organised by Romania and Bulgaria.
This is the second time an Atlantic 2 aircraft has been sent in mission to Romania by France.
Last April a French Navy maritime patrol aircraft "Atlantic 2" was deployed for the first time at the Mihail Kogălniceanu Air Base near Constanta.
The deployment of the French military aircraft Atlantic 2 in Romania was a premiere at the time, although the French Naval Forces have started patrol missions in the Black Sea with this type of aircraft, but taking off from Crete Island, Greece.
In June 2022, the French Armed Forces Staff (EMA) explained what such a mission consists of. The Atlantic 2 aircraft flies at a very low altitude [between 30 and 300 metres] in the maritime waters of Romania and Bulgaria using radar, infrared camera and on-board observers to monitor the maritime situation.
