Romania has recently signed a contract to purchase 54 KP-SAM Chiron systems from South Korea. The Chiron systems are produced by the Korean company LIG Nex1. The value of the contract is approximately $100 million.
Chiron is based on MBDA's Mistral system, systems that are also in the Korean Army's equipment and have played a key role for the Korean defence industry in the development of the Chiron.
It should be noted that a tender for the procurement of MANPAD systems in which only MBDA was left with Mistral systems was cancelled by the Romanian MoD in the summer of 2023 on the grounds that the offer was incompatible with the required provisions.
The contract for the procurement of Chiron systems was signed by direct G2G (government-to-government) award and not by tender.
Engineer Lieutenant General Teodor Incicaș, head of the Directorate General for Armaments, discussed on Radio Romania, also about the purchase of Chiron systems.
He said that this year the Romanian Army will receive the first systems from South Korea.
"We have the deliveries for the one-off purchase that we made last year of portable air defence systems that we bought from the Republic of Korea, with rapid delivery and these systems will come to us this year. Also, last year, colleagues from the ground forces signed the contract for the modernisation of the Oerlikon anti-aircraft artillery system", said the senior official of the Ministry of National Defence.
Romania becomes the first country in Europe to be equipped with Chiron systems from Korea. The Indonesian and Korean Armys are also equipped with MANPAD systems.
It should be recalled that in 2024 Romania has the largest defence budget in the last 30 years, aiming to reach 2.5% of GDP allocated to defence. Of this, 20% is allocated to armaments.
